What toppings will you choose to spread?
This yummy buttermilk soda bread is versatile and easy to make! Serve warm with a selection of cheeses, soup or even some garlic butter. Yum! Get the family around because this loaf will serve 8-10 people!
Ingredients:
1 2/3 cups of bread flour
1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 large egg
1 teaspoon of honey
Method:
First, start by preheating the oven to 190 degrees Celsius/gas mark 5
Next, mix the flours, salt and baking soda together. In a separate bowl, measure out the buttermilk and whisk in the honey and egg.
Then, make a hole in the centre of the dry ingredients, and pour in the wet mixture. Bring the mixture together to form a dough and add extra flour if the dough is too wet.
Place the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and sprinkle some extra flour on, knead the dough for a few minutes then make into a round ball shape around 6 inches in diameter.
Move the dough onto the prepared baking tray and using a sharp knife, cut an X about 1/2 inch deep from end to end then sprinkle lightly with extra flour.
Bake in the oven for around 35 minutes. You will know the bread is cooked when you tap the base of the bread and it sounds hollow. Let it cool for 5 minutes then enjoy!
