Not only is this week British Science Week but it’s also National Shakespeare Week! We’ve found some fun events taking place this weekend to help your child learn more about both!

Mary Rose Museum, Portsmouth: Shakespeare Weekend 21st & 22nd March, 11am-1pm & 2pm-4pm Adults £18, Children £13 for unlimited annual entry.

Find out about the history of the 500 year old Mary Rose and learn what the collection reveals about reading and writing in the 1500’s. Children of 6 + can also try their hand at writing like William Shakespeare with quill and ink!

Luton Library, Luton: Family Fun Time: Stars… Poetry…Fish, Saturday 21st 2.15-3pm. Suitable for school aged children. FREE.

To mark ‘Shakespeare Week’ there’s craft and storytelling session at the Luton Library on Saturday afternoon. Listen to ‘The Whisperer’, Nick Butterworth’s retelling of Romeo and Juliet from a rat’s-eye-view! Afterwards children can join in with craft activities, making puppets and props to tell their own stories! Suitable for school aged children.

Manchester Central Library, Manchester: Tudor Crafts, Saturday 21st March 12-4pm, FREE drop in session.

In celebration of ‘Shakespeare Week’ this great free event lets kids try their hand at lots of fun craft activities from making a Tudor neck ruff to a stained glass window. They can even try to write their very own sonnet with a quill just like the famous Shakespeare would have done all those years ago!

Follow the Shakespeare trail and find the hidden Shakespearian pictures. Use the clues to crack the code and children could win a book token!

ATOM Science Fair, Abingdon: Saturday 21st March 10-4pm, FREE.

Spend a great day with all the family at this free interactive science fair in celebration of ‘National Science Week’. There will be plenty of fascinating experiments for the kids to get involved with and a treasure hunt around the town that all the family can enjoy. The popular Zoo Bus will be visiting which houses a mini-micro lab and some pretty amazing animals too!

Jimmy’s Farm Science and Nature Festival, Suffolk: 21st & 22nd March 10-4pm, Adults £5.50 Kids £4.50.

Celebrate National Science Week at this great festival which is jam packed with fun and exciting things to do! The event is divided into different zones which include meeting and holding animals, learning all about the human body, science and nature exhibits and brilliant machines such as fire engines or off road Segways!

Science Museum, London, FREE

Visit the 100’s of exciting exhibits at the museum. My favourite area is the Launchpad which is full of exciting interactive exhibits aimed at 8-15 yr olds. If you have children under 7 then make sure you head for the Bubbles show that will take place this Saturday and Sunday at 12.30, 14.30 and 16.30. Your children will be amazed by the bubbles going up down and everywhere! They might even learn the secret Science museum bubble recipe! This is a popular show so get there early! (It’s free to watch)

London Wetland Centre, Family Bird Watching, Sunday 22nd March 11.30-1pm, £3 pp.

Spend a lovely day with the family bird watching at this fantastic centre. Many beautiful and unusual birds visit our shores in the winter months and this is a great opportunity for kids to learn how to use binoculars and how to identify different species. With an experienced warden to assist you are sure to see some really interesting things!

The Manchester Museum, Big Saturday: The Body Experience, Saturday 21st March, 11am-4pm. FREE

In celebration of ‘British Science Week’ bring the family to this great museum to explore everything there is to know about the human body. Kids will love the great interactive stands and hands-on activities from performing spine surgery with marshmallows, to making their own mucus! Yuck!

National Museum Cardiff: Family Science Day, Saturday 21st March, FREE

For ‘National Science Week’ bring the kids to this great museum where they will be able to meet scientists, ask questions and see some pretty amazing objects in the museum’s collections. For kids aged 8 and over there is a special tour on offer to explore collections that are housed behind the scenes!
