The kids are back to school however there are still plenty of fun events happening around the country to enjoy. Here’s our guide to what’s on this weekend for all the family!

Open House London, Various venues, 19th – 20th September, Free, all ages

The magnificent city of London is holding an open house weekend giving families the opportunity of visiting fascinating secret venues you probably never knew existed! Enjoy a ‘nosy’ day out exploring private homes, educational establishments and historical sites to name a few. For kids there will be drop in craft sessions at the Isis Education Centre, Lego building at the Royal College of Physicians, and for future architects the opportunity of constructing buildings at City Hall! Spiegeltent at Canary Wharf, Canada Square, London, 19th – 20th September, Various ticket prices, all ages

This event sounds like a lot of fun for everyone in the family! Head down to Canary Wharf for a weekend packed with entertainment, acrobatics, music, dancing, storytelling and lots more! Don’t miss the ‘Aircraft Circus’ and look out for the ‘Family Rave’ which sounds like a lot of fun! Younger family members will love the ‘Boppin Bunnies’ musical workshop and probably some grown-ups too!

Ramsbottom Festival at the Cricket Club, Manchester, 18th – 20th September, Adult day ticket £28, Child £6, all ages

Why not enjoy a weekend of fantastic music from brilliant well known and unknown bands at this exciting festival! It promises to be a great family event as there is lots on offer, from trapeze workshops to circus performances, or learning the ancient art of ‘Stone Balancing’. Everyone will love the theatre performance ‘The Town Band of Bremen’ with its music and puppetry. You can just visit for the day or maybe enjoy the entire weekend experience by camping on the festival campsite!

Salute to the 40’s at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham, Kent, 19th – 20th September, Adult £15, Child £9.50, all ages

Take a step back in time and immerse the family in 1940’s nostalgia by visiting this fantastic vintage festival! There will be live wartime music and dancing all weekend, a spectacular air display featuring the iconic ‘Spirit of Kent’ spitfire and gun firing from the World War destroyer, HMS Cavalier. Visit the V&A Museum exhibition where kids can dress-up and play fun war games their grandparents would have enjoyed and even learn the morse code!

Fayre Times Festival at Royal Gunpowder Mills,  Waltham Abbey, 19th – 20th September, Adult £8, Child £6, all ages

This fun festival celebrates history from years gone by and includes brilliant displays from Vikings, World War II soldiers, and fearless Knights. Expect the unexpected as there will be battles between dwarfs, elves, goblins and orcs as the world of folklore and fantasy will be explored! Don’t miss talks from writers about history and the world of science fiction and learn how people lived many years ago. Enter the kids in archery competitions or Knights school, and they can enjoy their own battles and adventures!

Captain Barnacles Pirate Panto, Bristol, 19th September, 5-6pm, Adult £15, Child £10 (age 7-16) £5 (age 6 and under), all ages

In celebration of international ‘ Talk like a Pirate Day’ pop along to the famous English ship ‘The Matthew’ to meet Captain Barnacles on a cruise. See his Pirate Panto that will include plenty of fun, music and naughty pirate high jinks to be sure Oooo-arrrgh!

World Rhino Day at Edinburgh Zoo, 19th September, 11am – 3:10pm, Free with zoo admission tickets, all ages

The five species of rhino are unfortunately facing extinction and this brilliant zoo is offering families the opportunity to learn all about these beautiful creatures, how they live and the threats they face. Find out what is being done to preserve them in the wild and see an epic tug of war between zoo keepers and female rugby players! With rhino feeding, storytelling, and talks from keepers, this day will give kids a wonderful insight into the lives of these magnificent animals.

History at the Hill, Hambledon Hill, Dorset, 20th September, 11am – 4pm, Adult £2, Child £1, all ages

Spend a family day outdoors exploring one of Dorset’s iconic hill forts. Everyone can enjoy plenty of hands-on activities and finding out all about the area from a National Trust archaeologist and a conservation advisor. Kids will love learning all about the Bronze and Iron age, and why not be energetic and enjoy the climb to the very top of the hill!

Steam Gala and Family Fun Day at Perrygrove Railway, Coleford, Gloucestershire, 19th– 20th September, 10:30am – 5pm, Adult £6.80 Child £5.30, all ages

This fantastic heritage railway is holding its annual steam gala which sounds like an ideal place for a family day out. There will be a BBQ, face painting and a treasure hunt the kids will love, and of course the opportunity to ride upon exciting steam trains through the beautiful Forest of Dean!

Southport Airshow 2015, Southport Seafront, 19th – 20th September, 9am-5pm, Adults £8.36, Child £6.27, all ages

An airshow always provides exhilarating entertainment for all the family and this airshow promises spectacular historical aircraft displays, fast jets and breathtaking aerobatics. You can even experience what it is like to be daredevil pilot in a flight simulator! There is plenty of action on the ground to enjoy too so be prepared to be thoroughly entertained!

Clumber Park Food Festival, Worksop, 19th – 20th September, 10am -5pm, Adults £6, Child £4, all ages

This Festival of Food and Drink promises to be a great day out with the chance to sample and buy delicious food from around Europe, as well as plenty of special guests to see including celebrity chef John Torode. The kids will be entertained with opportunities to learn new baking skills and decorate biscuits. They will love bouncing on the trampolines but maybe before they’ve filled their tummies with tasty treats!
