The IWM North have got a brilliant week of FREE family activities between Saturday 24th May and Sunday 1st June called Amazing Animals, inspired by the unusual roles of animals from message carrying pigeons to brave rescue dogs. They also have the fascinating exhibition From Street To Trench: A World War That Shaped A Region which includes many family friendly interactive activities .

Visitors of all ages can get involved through family workshops, children’s tours and activities.
Unless otherwise stated activities are free, drop-in sessions (places may be limited on the day).

Discover incredible stories of animals during war time, from message carrying pigeons to strong horses and brave rescue dogs. Get crafty and make your own creature to take home.
Meet the Author: A Dog in No Man’s Land
Friday 30 May at 11am -12.30pm and 2-3.30pm (all ages)

Be the first to buy a signed copy of the exciting new book, A Dog in No Man’s Land, before it hits the shops in June. Get your book signed by the author Damian Kelleherand learn about other real life dogs at war. Pick your favourite to draw and frame your pooch portrait by designing your own unique scratch art frame to display it in.
Spot the Pigeon

Friendly comic pigeon characters are on the loose in the Museum. Will you spot one of these specially invited characters as you explore the building? Inspired by the stories of real life pigeon message carriers from the First World War the giant pigeons will be strutting their stuff and you can pick up out fascinating facts about the roles amazing animals during wartime.

A Horse’s Tale
Thursday 29 May at 11.15am, 12.15pm, 1.15pm and 2.15pm (ideal for age 5+)
Main Exhibition Space
Special family friendly performances dramatizing the work of horses that served in the First World War. As told through the eyes of a member of the Women’s Remount Section, who were responsible for training horses for their new lives on the frontline.
Animal Antics

Main Exhibition Space
Learn about the roles of brave and surprising creatures during war time. Hear stories of their special skills and become an amazing animal at our mobile dressing up station.
