Here’s our pick of things to do this weekend across the country. From an amazing pet show in London, to planetarium events and exhilarating outdoor adventures there’s something for everyone!


London Pet Show: ExCel London, 9th & 10th,  May Adult £16 Kids 5+ £12.78
Calling all animal enthusiasts and pet owners big and small! This weekend it’s the return of the London Pet Show so expect hundreds of different animals and lots of fascinating talks and demonstrations from some really cool experts, vets and celebrities including reptile expert Crocodile Joe. For entertainment don’t miss the doggy dancing, rabbit show jumping and duck herding! The show has an aim of promoting responsible pet ownership so this is an ideal opportunity to gain advice if you are thinking of adding to your family!

Covent Garden May and Puppet Festival: London, 10th May, 11am-5.30pm, FREE
Held in the grounds of ‘the Actor’s Church’  (St Pauls) in Covent Garden this traditional day of entertainment celebrates the first time Samuel Pepys ever saw a Punch and Judy show many years ago. Puppeteers from all over the world come to perform here and there will be a Grand Procession at 11am with a brass band, clowns and maypole dancing making this a fantastic event all the family will enjoy.

Discover Japan: Liverpool World Museum 9th May, drop in between 1-4pm, FREE
At this great drop-in event members of the Japan Society will be helping kids learn how to write their name in Japanese and all about origami, including how to make an animal from one piece of paper!

Family Planetarium Day: Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, Manchester, 9th & 10th May, Normal admission plus £1
Families with kids aged over 5 should not miss this great opportunity to visit this pop-up planetarium to see a show that will explore the wonders of the night sky. Shows last 30 minutes and are shown throughout the day with a special screening at 12:30 for families with kids aged 5 and under. Other times: 11.15, 12.00, 12.45, 1.30, 2.15, 3.00, 3.45  (Normal admission: Adults £6.30, Kids £4.50) Booking is advised as this is a very popular event.

Honey Bee Fayre: Yalding, Kent, 10th May, 10.30-4.30pm FREE
We all know how important bees are  to the planet. Why not visit this annual Honey Bee Fayre, where you will learn lots about these amazing creatures and meet bee enthusiasts on hand to answer questions. Plus you can sample and buy some yummy honey too! There are also various stalls from bee themed craft, to cakes and book stalls.

Wildlife Celebration at Trebah Garden: Falmouth, Cornwall, 9th & 10th May 10.30am- 4pm, Adults £9, child £3
Cornwall Wildlife Trust is holding its annual gathering at Trebah Gardens. There are many activities planned throughout the weekend. You will be able to learn all about Cornwall’s wildlife, plus join in with scavenger hunts, wildlife walks, rockpool rambles and even make a bird box!

Conkers, Activity Weekend: Swadlincote, Derbyshire, 9th & 10th May, included in normal admission Adult £8.95, £6.95, some activities aged 8+
Adventurous families, who love the great outdoors will enjoy the combination of water sports and Forest Ranger activities taking place this weekend. you can test kata canoeing, archery, go karting, mountain bike trails and sensory art classes, all within the usual admission price. You must book activities in advance though!

Techniquest: Cardiff, Adult £7.50, Child £6
Bring the family here for a fun and educational day out; a hands-on science discovery centre that the kids will love exploring with over 130 interactive exhibits from hot air balloon, and hydrogen rocket, down to chunky puzzles. There is a changing programme of events, Science Theatre and Planetarium. This weekend special activities are themed around the topics, Yucky You, Space Hunters and Giants of the Solar System!

Ayr County Show: Ayr Racecourse, Scotland,  9th May, Adults £12 kids (14 and under) free
It’s time for one of largest shows held in the West of Scotland and is definitely worth a visit. Expect lots of animal exhibitions, crafts and Tractor displays. There will be plenty of family entertainment on offer and an educational Kids corner. Pay a visit to the many food stands where you are sure to find something tasty to eat!
