Fun family activities for spring 2023!

Get ready for spring because it’s nearly here,
With great activities, it’s our favourite time of the year!
From gardening to growing vegetables, there is so much to do,
Check out some fun spring activities for all of you!

‘Grow’ a butterfly garden

I LOVE doing this! Buy a butterfly farm from the internet and your whole family will watch in amazement as the caterpillars grow, create a chrysalis, and then emerge as butterflies. This really is a WOW activity for the whole family to enjoy!

Grow something to eat

It could be cress in an egg, tomatoes, potatoes, sunflowers, or even runner beans! Whatever you fancy! You don’t need much space. You can use a grow bag for tomatoes, and runner beans will grow happily in a jar!

Go on a bug hunt

There are a few ways you can do this:

  1. Look under stones in your garden.
  2. Dig a hole in your lawn and leave a plastic cup in it. Leave overnight and by morning a few bugs should have fallen in! Don’t do this in the rain though or they can drown 🙁
  3. Hold an umbrella upside down under a tree or bush and shake a branch. Watch to see which insects tumble into your umbrella!

Visit cute baby animals

This is the perfect time of year to watch new life ‘spring’ into action, from cute chicks, to gorgeous lambs! Even watching tadpoles turn into baby frogs is amazing! Visit a farm near you to get your fill of spring cuteness! Check out our list of animal attractions near you here!

Go pond dipping

This is a perfect time of year to spot frogspawn as well as lots of other wildlife. Head to a pond near your home and check out the abundance of insects and other animals you can see!

Have a family welly flinging competition

This is a traditional game and an easy one to play with the whole family. Simply take off your welly and fling it! The winner could be the one who:
Throws their welly the highest/ furthest/ nearest to a target! Traditionally you throw your welly backwards over your head.

Do a night-time Easter egg hunt!

Put glow sticks inside plastic egg shapes and hide around the garden for a very special bit of Easter fun!

Make a hanging basket

At this time of year you can grab an empty hanging basket from a garden center or a pound shop. Fill with soil and colourful flowers! This is a lovely activity for children as they can see quick results rather than waiting for something to grow. They also make nice gifts for Grandparents 🙂

Press some flowers

Pressed flowers maintain their vibrant colours and are perfect for creating homemade cards and pictures afterwards. To press a flower follow these steps:

  • Pick some flowers (smallish ones are best)
  • Place inside a fold of newspaper (this will absorb the moisture)
  • Put this in the middle of a large book such as a catalogue/ phone book
  • Put other books or heavy items on top and leave for 3-5 days.

Get arty outdoors!

When the sun’s out grab some large paper, paint and water and let them create! Mine love using rollers the best, but if they’re outdoors its also great fun to create footprints and handprints like Ollie and Harry pictured here!. Just have a hose ready to wash them off at the end!

Jump in muddy puddles

Jump like Peppa pig….in muddy puddles! Well. Why not?! Prepare to get wet though so waterproofs are advisable!

Wormcharming

This is a noisy one, but the kids will love it! First, find some worms. Then play them some music and see who can make the worms wiggle! Don’t worry the worms can’t hear but they will feel the vibrations made by the instruments. (Remember they are living creatures so be sure your kids handle them with care)

Play pooh sticks

If you have a river with a bridge near you then this game is great fun! Choose a stick each (or use plastic ducks!!) Ready….set….go…. all throw the sticks in the water! The person whose stick travels under the bridge and comes out the other side first wins! (check which way the river is flowing before you do this otherwise the sticks will go the wrong way! )

Have a picnic or even a BBQ!

There’s nothing like a sunny spring day to get you in the mood for a bit of outdoor eating! At a park, on a beach, wherever takes your fancy! Make it a family event to remember by playing a game of rounders or cricket too. How civilised!

Do you know any more lovely spring activities! We’d really love to know! Someone else might love it, and really want to give them a go! If you’ve got ideas, suggestions or reviews, you can shout all about it on whatever channel you choose!
