The Best Beaches in Dorset

Dorset is well known for it’s variety of beautiful beaches and coastal heritage sites. Here’s a selection of some of my own favourite family friendly beaches for that perfect southern seaside escape… with lots of fun things to do for all of the family!

Studland Bay

This National Trust owned beach, located a short five minute chain ferry journey from Poole Harbour, is a lovely family day out! This beautiful beach has four miles of protected golden sands and a stunning view of Old Harry Rocks and the Isle of Wight. It’s perfect for a variety of watersports and for exploring lots of exciting wildlife, including deer, insects and birds! For rumbling tums, pay a visit to the nearby Knoll Beach cafe. Find out more.

Sandbanks

Often referred to as the ‘Monte Carlo’ of the UK, this stretch of golden sands has been awarded a Blue Flag award and offers a variety of water sports activities for all of the family to enjoy, including paddle boarding, windsurfing and more! There’s even a Crazy Golf course on site. Pay a visit to the nearby Shore Cafe, or if you’re feeling fancy stop by the exclusive Rick Stein restaurant! Find out more.

Bournemouth Beach

This famous activity and events packed beach offers something for all of the family… even a zip wire from the pier to the stretch of seven glorious miles of sand. Hosting events such as the Bournemouth Air Festival, Arts by the Sea and more, you’ll be spoilt for choice! Head to one of the many cafes and restaurants nearby, including West Beach and Harry Ramsden’s for traditional fish and chips by the sea! Find out more.

Durdle Door

This stunning beach, which is part part of the Lulworth Estate and the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, is a popular site for snorkeling, cave exploring and swimming. Bring along a picnic to take in the amazing views of the famous rock arch and beautiful coastline! Find out more.

Swanage

This Victorian seaside beach is a popular one for families due to its calm and sheltered waters. Take a stroll along the Victorian pier, visit the amusement centre or hire deck chairs, boats and pedalos for a real vintage seaside experience! Find out more.
